Constipated Toddler
A constipated toddler can be a serious concern for the parents. Both my boys had toddler constipation which caused both us parents a lot of stress because every time our babies struggled to pooh, especially the second one, he found it quite painful and he was sore due to the hard bowel movements.
This further discouraged him from having a regular bowel movement. Being a constipated toddler he would control his bowels and not pooh, in due course of time he was a chronic constipation toddler.According to our pediatrician constipation in toddlers or toddler constipation as it is normally called is quite common; my older son was constipated by choice, the problem with him was two fold he felt it was an absolute waste of his precious play time. In his case it was not as easy or normal as in potty training toddlers, he refused to sit on the potty even if he was half way through the process of unloading, so as a token favor for us he would leave a few droppings like a Kid(goat baby) and run away saying he has finished and after a while he would be walking around like a duck about to lay eggs because he could not hold the remaining cargo any longer, before our first boy we thought that potty training toddlers was easy but that thought flew out the window very soon
We tried a few remedies; it worked well when the boys were little,These were a few things handed down from our grand parents (traditional methods) to deal with constipation in toddlers • A tea spoon of Castor oil to drink. (I know this is cruel and barbaric). We were willing to try anything We were also generous in applying Castor oil/ coconut oil on the rectum to keep it lubricated so it soothes the rectum and prevents burning sensation and soreness especially for a chronic constipation toddler. Now making him drink it was a mission on its own so wish you all the best in your fight against toddler constipation. • very ripe bananas to eat after a meal or banana as a meal on its own Children enjoy ripe bananas and help’s them have a reasonably free bowel movement. Some people believe that bananas prevent from passing motion, but in our case it seemed to have worked both ways, for a constipated toddler and when they had loose motions. • We gave plenty of liquids especially apple juice. And no other variants of apple just plain apple juice we also gave other fresh fruit juices • Boiled carrots, pumpkin, lettuce peas etc make it into a soup mixed with rice (all mashed up) because they will not like to eat just the vegges on their own Avoid bread especially toast, crackers, biscuits and a majority of the milk products except mother’s milk. The is one other oil which can be applied on the rectum of a constipated toddler, that is Olive oil, it is considered a elixir among oils, I am not sure if it helps in the same way as by drinking Castor oil for easy bowel movements. We have not tried it on our children, however from the time we have started using it for all our cooking we seem to be in better health including with good bowel movements.
